Creative INSET : Inspiring arts through object-based learning techniques

About the Horniman Museum and Gardens The Horniman Museum and Gardens is an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. With collections from world cultures, natural history, musical instruments, an aquarium, themed Gardens and more, experience the whole world and discover something new! Pupils can touch, hold and study real museum objects in our curriculum-linked learning sessions: from an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus piece to a real shark’s jaw. About the INSET Explore how to use cultural organisations and amazing physical objects to create inspiring cross-curricular arts projects in your school. You’ll learn the theory and benefits of object-based learning, including activities focussed on accessibility and affective learning outcomes (e.g. SMSC), by getting hands-on with real museum objects from around the world.  We’ll explore how artists and school groups have responded creatively to inspiring objects at the Horniman, indoors and outside in our diverse Gardens. Finally we’ll support you to design your own effective arts project tailored to your school. Learning outcomes for participants    Principles of Object Based Learning Practical activities: how to use objects in and out of the classroom to meet curriculum and SMSC objectives Explore creating artistic responses to objects in a variety of media (e.g. visual art, performance, music) Plan your own cross-curricular arts project inspired by cultural resources   Suitable for This event is suitable for teachers and teaching assistants working in London schools, from all disciplines, Key Stages and educational settings, with an interest in creative learning. We regret that this session is not open to colleagues from cultural organisations or freelancers working with schools. Image credit: Hands on base image - Horniman Museum and Gardens © Joel Knight
